JOB DESCRIPTION: NASA Space Vehicle Electrical Systems Safety Engineer

Our team has has an exciting and challenging opportunity to support NASA’s present and future human spaceflight programs. You will assist with the design, development, test and evaluation of spacecraft systems and mission planning for NASA’s Orion Program. You will be responsible for ensuring spacecraft Command and Control Data Handling systems are comply with all applicable Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) requirements. Some travel to vendors, prime contractor sites, and/or vehicle processing centers may be required. 


Responsibilities include:

 
  •  
  • Assist with the development and effective implementation of Safety, Reliability and Quality Assurance (SR&QA) requirements, processes and procedures
  • Evaluation of spacecraft design and operations for compliance to NASA SR&QA requirements and system certification limits / constraints
  • Evaluation of changes to requirements, materials, processes and procedures for potential impacts to flight safety and mission success
  • Evaluation of prime contractor processes and products including hazard analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), design verification analysis, reliability and maintainability analysis, limited life item time/cycle tracking reports, hardware qualification and acceptance test reports
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative risk assessments and trade studies
  • Perform integrated hazard analyses of joint operations between HLS, Gateway, and Extravehicular Activity Systems (EVAS) to identify potential hazards, hazard causes, and controls, and document residual flight safety risk
  • Identify, characterize, and provide recommendations regarding the mitigation of safety and mission assurance risks to senior management
  • Participation in failure analysis and problem resolution

This role also allows the opportunity to cross-train and support the Artemis Mission Evaluation Room (MER) console.

REQUIREMENTS: NASA Space Vehicle Electrical Systems Safety Engineer
   
Education: BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
    
Year(s) of Experience: 3+ years in Engineering or Operations (preferably in NASA Space Programs)

Minimum Citizenship: U.S. Citizen
    
Required Skills and Traits:
    
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
  • High degree of technical excellence, integrity, and self-initiative
  • Ability to evaluate technical merits of spacecraft designs and identify alternative solutions to complex technical problems to mitigate mission risk
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple organizations / stakeholders and within a teaming environment to get results
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Power Point, Excel)
  • Must be able to pass a Government Background check to receive a Public Trust clearance
  • Must be able to travel (~10%) and work occasional shifts to support space missions      

Other Desired Skills:
 
  • Experience with spacecraft design, test and verification, maintenance, and operations
  • Safety, Reliability and Quality Assurance (SR&QA) experience is desirable with emphasis on the development and utilization of system safety (hazard analysis) and reliability analyses (FMEA / CIL, PRA, RBDA, FTA) to inform and influence design, test, and verification activities, and planned flight operations
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and development of fault trees to support anomaly / non-conformance investigations
