JOB DESCRIPTION


Current policies and regulations for air traffic management have the ability to balance safety and efficiency in the national Airspace, but commercial and private use of Low-altitude small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) has added a significant risk to manned aircraft.  As these UAS begin to operate beyond the line of sight or autonomously and air traffic becomes highly congested, it is critical for the DoD to safely integrate into the UTM system.  The development of the UTM system needs to incorporate the DoD needs for the use of Manned and Unmanned systems being flown today and in the future.

The successful candidate for this position will be the principal software engineer extending and modifying NASA’s UTM system to integrate DoD aircraft into UTM airspace and will:

 
  • Implement software and system requirements to support DoD operations in the UTM system
  • Develop testing infrastructure for the various components of the UTM system developed to support DoD operations
  • Collaborate in design and UTM team architecture discussions and decisions as appropriate
  • Work closely with other UTM researchers and software engineering personnel to ensure consistency of research and work products with other aspects of UTM.
 
REQUIREMENTS

 
Education:  BS in Computer Science or Related Field
Year(s) of Experience: 10+ years

Required Skills and Traits
(Skills to include software, hardware, technical, scientific, research, operations, and administrative):

 
  • All aspects of software development lifecycle included software requirements specification and refinement, architecture, design, implementation, testing,  integration, documentation, management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Fluent in Java, AWS, git, Jenkins and agile methods.
  • Ability to work in a small team and communicate as necessary with a larger team developing related systems.
  • Integrate own work with the existing system..


Other Desired Skills
(Skills other than those required to meet the minimum requirements for the job)

 
  • Familiarity with NASA UAS Traffic Management (UTM).
  • Experience with other air traffic management (ATM) systems.
  • Familiarity with Federal Aviation Regulations.
  • Familiarity with DoD use of UAS.
